Last night marked the beginning of a new season in the life of those in the journey. We are beginning to march forward from our fortified position behind the four walls of Perrow Church, into the community of Cross Lanes and beyond. In our marching forward as soldiers of the LORD, we are battling with the forces of darkness (Ephesians 6) in winning over our acquaintances, friends, family, school, neighborhood, teammates, and so on, to the Lordship of Jesus Christ.
Did you know…
that as of 2005 there were 919 youth between the ages of 5 and 18 in Cross Lanes, WV alone? Out of these youth alone, I believe that the LORD is calling us to reach out and disciple 20% of them, for a total of 185.
You may ask, “How in the world are we going to be able to accomplish such a large feat?” Great question and I’m glad you asked. We are going to do it by humbly trusting in the LORD to empower us to be a witness in our lack of desire and inability to do so (Acts 1.8) and begin by reaching out to “just 1.”
Currently, we are averaging roughly 60 youth. If all of these youth were to pray for, reach out to, and disciple “just 1,” then these 60 youth have doubled to 120 in one year. Now, if these 120 turn and do the same thing, then in two years, the youth have doubled to 240.
First, before moving on any further. This is not a numbers game, this is not about “how big the youth program is.” This is about reaching out to those that do not have a committed relationship with Jesus Christ. This is about reaching out in our darkened world with the light of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This is what we are all about, others and not ourselves!
Second, in Matthew 28.16-20, which we looked at last night, we are commanded to go and make disciples of allthe nations (vs. 18). However, before we go into other towns, states, and countries, we must first go to those within our own circle of influence. Those who we know, those in our family, those who we have befriended at school, on teams, in our neighborhood, and even on MySpace, these are the ones that we must first be consumed with reaching out to.
It is no accident that God has chosen to save us and that we are involved in the lives of those that we are involved with. We are wanted and empowered by God to go out and do what we have been called to do, and that is to reach out to our town of Cross Lanes, and see many children and youth committed to Christ and taught of His Word and ways. To see these children and youth committed to meaningful relationships, not only with their peers, but also mature and godly Christian believers and families. And finally, we desire to see them committed to serving Jesus Christ. For we all have been created for good works before we were even born. These good works God desires for us to walk within right here and now, regardless of how old we are or if we have graduated from high school or college (Ephesians 2.10).
I challenge each and every single one of us to begin praying and reaching out for “just 1.” Who is the 1 that God has placed in your life to disciple?
